Fiberglass Boat Hull Step Repair
Captain Levi’s has the knowledge and experience to repair your Boat Hull Steps.
This forty‑two foot, extremely high performance, Epoxy Fiberglass Reinforced power boat, built by Outerlimits Offshore Power Boats of Bristol, RI, is designed to run in excess of 160 miles an hour! That matey is a punishing activity that tests the absolute limits of the Fiberglass Boat’s Construction, Drive Train and Operator. Anything less than high quality workmanship, quality Fiberglass building materials and engineering can be fatal.
Outerlimits, founded by Mike Fiore, is a progressive builder continually stretching the limits. Mike Fiore chooses ADTECH Plastic Systems as the major supplier of sophisticated epoxy composite systems for hull construction in their high‑performance boats. All of the Fiberglass Hulls are cored and vacuum‑bagged. Many also employ structural carbon reinforcements. By maximizing material properties and state‑of‑the art processes like vacuum‑bagging and post‑curing, Outerlimits’ long, lean hulls are able to withstand speeds in excess of 160 mph.
Captain Levi’s, with Captain Dave and Levi Holley at the helm, employ ARJAY Technologies, Quality Performance Resins, manufactured by DOW, for these types of high stress Fiberglass Repairs. The Owner of Arjay Technologies and Dave have collaborated for over three decades involved in some of the most sophisticated composite repairs and construction techniques.
Captain Levi’s employs PRO‑BUILD resin, manufactured by Darkside Composites, for superior wet‑out and secondary bonding of structural components. Available in several formulations, including the fire‑retardant PRO‑BUILD FR, PRO‑BUILD has a consistently high strength rating and excellent mechanical properties.
Vinyl Ester resins also play a role in laminate flexibility and corrosion resistance. Fiberglass mat and 1708 biaxial fabrics are used as the reinforcement materials in the laminates along with epoxy or vinyl ester resins.
Repairs to steps, chines or strakes involve:
- Precision grinding
- Fiberglass laminate buildup
- Secondary bonding
- Fairing with epoxy‑based fillers
- Multiple long‑board sanding passes to restore the original surface profile
- Gel coat or polyurethane paint spraying as required, color‑matched and wet‑sanded
- Final finishing buffed to a mirror gloss using AQUABUFF compounds
On boats like this 42’ Outerlimits, Dave and Levi treat every step repair as a life‑or‑death fiberglass repair job. Offshore at 160 mph, there are no shortcuts.
From their base in Largo, Florida, Captain Levi’s provides shop repairs and mobile hull step fiberglass repair service throughout Tampa Bay and all 24 municipalities of Pinellas County.
